German MBDA subsidiary TDW presented its Lion Strike loitering munition (LM) warheads at the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) 2025 exhibition held in London on 9-12 September. The warhead family is the company's first product for LMs and is available as a fully integrated product, TDW announced in a press release on 10 September.
Consisting of a shaped charge and an electronic safety and firing device, the warheads were developed in less than six months to combat modern main battle tanks and other armoured vehicles, according to TDW. An optional fragmentation jacket allows the warheads to be used in various scenarios, with the family including different calibres, allowing them to be used in a wide range of unmanned aerial, ground, and underwater vehicles.
The modular and standardised warhead systems are specifically designed for LMs. TDW managing director Andreas Seitz told Janes at DSEI 2025 that Lion Strike is designed for an unmanned system to be built around it.
The Lion Strike LS110 110 mm x 190 mm standard shaped charge weighs 3 kg, including approximately 1.5 kg of explosive. It has been tested and qualified as an explosive under NATO Standardization Agreement (STANAG) 4170 and as an insensitive munition under STANAG 4439, and has reached technology readiness level (TRL) 9 according to the company.
With Lion Strike, TDW is offering scalability and standardisation of LM warhead production, with Seitz saying the company could manufacture one unit every five minutes, subject to receiving orders.
