Havelsan and Egypt's state-owned Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI) will jointly produce autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the Turkish company announced on 27 August.
AOI released a statement a day earlier saying it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Havelsan covering co-operation in various manufacturing fields in line with Egypt's Vision 2030 plan for sustainable development.
Major General Mokhtar Abedellatif, AOI's chairman, described the MOU as āan important step towards deepening local manufacturing and localising the latest technologiesā. He added the plan is to meet Egyptian requirements and export to other Arab and African countries.
Havelsan announced on the following day that it had signed a strategic co-operation agreement with AOI for the joint production of autonomous UAVs but subsequently deleted its press release from its website. Its announcement was accompanied by a video showing its Baha fixed-wing vertical take-off and landing UAV.
Baha entered service with the Turkish Armed Forces earlier this year. According to Havelsan, the electrically powered UAV has a maximum take-off weight of 28 kg with a 2 kg payload, a communications range of 50 km, and an endurance of up to 2 h.
