The joint venture (JV) between Italy's Leonardo and Türkiye's Baykar related to the development of technologies for unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) has been named LBA Systems, the two parties disclosed on 10 June.
Timed to coincide with the Paris Air Show, running from 16 to 22 June, the disclosure came some three months after the fifty-fifty JV was announced in early March.
“The strong synergy between Leonardo and Baykar is really the asset of the JV. We can combine the most advanced [Leonardo] payloads, electronics sensors, cameras, [and] technologies with the most advanced drones that Baykar is fabricating of different sizes and payloads,” Roberto Cingolani, CEO and general manager of Leonardo, said.
“LBA Systems brings together two engineering heavyweights with a shared vision. Baykar's battle-proven UCAV [unmanned combat aerial vehicle] technologies and Leonardo's European experience and systems integration form a perfect alliance,” Selçuk Bayraktar, chief technology officer at Baykar, said.
While neither party disclosed the meaning of LBA Systems, it likely refers to Leonardo, Baykar, and the Akıncı UCAV, which is to be the initial focus of the JV as announced at the signing of the agreement on 6 March.
