The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) is undertaking a partial renewal of its airlift capabilities with the acquisition of used C-130H Hercules aircraft to replace its ageing C-130B fleet.
This development was revealed by the Chief of RSAF, Major General Kelvin Fan Sui Siong, in a written reply to questions from the media ahead of the Singapore Airshow 2026.
“We have a mix of C-130H and C-130B aircraft. Our C-130Bs are older – they have been in service since 1977 and are due for replacement”, Maj Gen Fan said.
“After thorough evaluations, we have determined that the C-130 remains the best platform to meet our operational needs for the next 15 to 20 years.
“The RSAF is therefore acquiring used, but still well-maintained, C-130H aircraft to replace our ageing C-130Bs. Deliveries have begun and these aircraft will be repurposed to meet the RSAF's requirements,” he added.
Singapore's fleet of C-130 aircraft are operated by the RSAF's 122 Squadron and the airframes have been deployed for both military and humanitarian missions.
The C-130H is equipped with more modern avionics, including updated navigation, communication, and flight management systems.
In addition, the C-130H benefits from structural and systems improvements that allow for a higher maximum take-off weight and greater payload.
As such, the C-130H can typically carry more cargo or personnel over longer distances compared with the C-130B, making it more suitable for the RSAF's expanding operational requirements.
In his reply, Maj Gen Fan stopped short of any details regarding costs, unit numbers, or the origin of the airframes.
