Special Report: Australia's new MQ-4C facilities align with key priorities

Australia's investment in newly opened facilities in the Northern Territory to operate Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPASs) will enable the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) to meet key objectives set out in the 2024 National Defence Strategy (NDS), a spokesperson for the Department of Defence (DoD) in Canberra told Janes on 17 February.

According to the DoD, the purpose-built MQ-4C facilities, which were opened in late January, include maintenance hangars, new airfield pavements, working accommodation, and “essential supporting infrastructure” for the high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

Australia has ordered four MQ-4C UAVs since 2018, with the fourth and final aircraft in production and scheduled to be delivered by 2028. The programme – under the DoD's Air 7000 Phase 1B project – is worth AUD355.7 million (USD252 million) including the new facilities at RAAF Base Tindal in the Northern Territory.

The DoD spokesperson said, “The new MQ-4C Triton facilities … contribute to 2024 National Defence Strategy priorities by improving the Australian Defence Force's [ADF's] ability to operate from Australia's northern bases, enabling projection into Australia's primary area of military interest, and delivering persistent situational awareness for the integrated, focused force.”

The spokesperson added, “The new facilities allow for efficient operational servicing between missions, enhancing our ability to operate in our region.”

The project to build the facilities started in May 2023. The DoD has not revealed the value of investment in facilities but said the project “injected more than AUD166 million” into the Northern Territory. RAAF Base Tindal is located about 320 km southeast of Darwin.
