Taiwan's state-owned National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the US-based company AeroVironment, Inc (AV) to collaborate on autonomous systems and related technologies.
Signed during the Taipei Aerospace & Defense Technology Exhibition (TADTE) 2025, which is being held in Taiwan from 18 to 20 September, the agreement âestablishes a framework for AV and NCSIST to jointly pursue opportunities to strengthen the life cycle and sustainability of Taiwan's unmanned and precision strike systemsâ, AV said in a statement on 18 September.
Under the agreement, AV will initially focus on supporting its Jump 20 and Jump 20-X vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The company said that it will provide technical expertise, training, and sustainment processes âto help NCSIST build infrastructure that enhances readiness and resilience on the islandâ.
âFuture efforts will include co-development of unmanned systems and collaboration around autonomy software,â the company added.
The Jump 20 was developed primarily for naval deployments and is capable of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations. With a modular architecture, the UAV supports third-party payloads, radios, and control options.
The Jump 20-X is an improved platform, powered by a Northwest UAV-built 15 hp heavy fuel engine (HFE) for forward flight. Also equipped with an improved electrical generator, the UAV can generate greater power for payloads.
According to Justin McFarlin, vice-president of International Business Development for AV, the partnership combines AV system's âcombat-proven effectivenessâ with NCSIST's research and development capabilities. This will ensure that âTaiwan can produce and sustain mission-critical systems, strengthen deterrence, and respond quickly to evolving threatsâ, he said.
