Dedrone is expanding its core counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) technologies beyond smaller Group 1 and Group 2 UAS, working with German firm Tytan Technologies to address Group 3 drone threats, such as the Iranian Shahed used by Russia in Ukraine.

“We do everything from hardware to software. We have our own C2 [command-and-control] system, which does all the things starting from detection and track[ing] and identification to defeat [through] electronic jamming,” Henning Heine Tam, senior vice-president, chief of staff and head of corporate development and business operations for Dedrone, told Janes on 15 October during the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) conference in Washington, DC.

Current products include a mobile C-UAS radio frequency (RF) jammer that can block UAS signals and spoof global navigation satellite services (GNSS) and fixed-site systems, some of which have been deployed with the US Department of Homeland Security for border protection, he said.

The key is the software, which is “good at detecting the specific location of the drone”, Tam said.

Integration

Dedrone integrates third-party electro-optic/infrared cameras and radars into its solutions while providing in-house RF capabilities.

Integration is key, Tam said, noting that radars produce a lot of track data that must be processed. Tuning radars to detect smaller drone targets means a lot of clutter, such as trees, will be picked up, making it “difficult for the operator [to] understand what they're looking at. If you didn't add other modalities, it's just a mess”, he explained.

Dedrone employs an open architecture and is Sapient compliant, Tam added.
