DIMDEX 2026: Fincantieri unveils ANDROMEGA SHORAD system centred on Omega360 radar

Fincantieri revealed to Janes the latest iteration of its Omega360 radar system in a short-range air-defence (SHORAD) role at the DIMDEX 2026 show held in Doha from 19 to 22 January.

“This is an X-band radar with some unique characteristics,” said a representative of Fincantieri's radar and counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) task force.

Omega360 can continuously cover 360° in azimuth and up to 60° in elevation, using 192 simultaneous directive beams for aerial targets, including UAS and helicopters, and surface targets, including unmanned surface vehicles (USVs).

The representative singled out Omega360's persistence on target, with the high spectrum resolution of its antennas, enabling detailed target classification and micro-Doppler confirmation, down to the make and model of a UAS from the frequency of its propeller rotation.

An omnidirectional transmission beam and 192 receiving channels arranged in a cylindrical array mean this ubiquitous, rather than scanning, radar can continue to observe targets down to 2° azimuth beamwidth.

“Smaller radars, as are often used with C-UAS or SHORAD systems, can't dedicate so much time of detail on the target continuously,” said the representative. He added that Omega360 has an instrumented range of 30 km and is able to confirm the identity of even a small class 1 UAS using its radar alone, without the need for cross-checking from an electro-optical camera.

Previously a Fincantieri NexTech project, as of January 2026, Omega360 is being developed and produced in Rome by a specific Fincantieri task force. “This is the first radar we [Fincantieri] have designed and made ourselves from scratch,” the representative said.
