The prime industrial contractors representing the three partner countries in the development of the sensors and communications suites for the Global Combat Air programme (GCAP) have formed a new joint venture (JV) called GCAP Electronics Evolution (G2E).
Announced on 9 September at the Defence and Security Equipment International 2025 exhibition in London, G2E comprises Mitsubishi Electric representing Japan, Leonardo UK representing the United Kingdom, and both Leonardo and ELT Group representing Italy. News of the new consortium, which was signed off in August, came some two-and-a-half years after the companies signed an initial collaboration agreement at DSEI Japan in March 2023.
“The forming of a consortium formalises that collaboration as a commercial construct, representing substantial progress at an industrial level and reinforcing the partners' long-term commitment to GCAP,” the partners said in a joint statement.
With its formation, G2E is now preparing to be contracted by the Edgewing consortium, comprising BAE Systems (UK), Leonardo (Italy), and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co Ltd (Japan), which is charged with the overall industrial delivery of GCAP.
“The four [G2E] companies will work together to deliver the next-generation combat aircraft's advanced sensing and communication system, known as Integrated Sensing and Non-Kinetic Effects & Integrated Communications Systems (ISANKE & ICS), as well as the system's decades-long Through-Life Support Service (TLSS),” the statement said.
