Hensoldt has secured a EUR100 million (USD118 million) order from Diehl Defence to supply TRML-4D air surveillance radars, along with maintenance and training packages, to countries participating in the European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), according to a 2 February Hensoldt press release.
The TRML-4D active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar will be integrated into Diehl Defence's IRIS-T SLM (Surface Launched Medium Range) air-defence system, according to the release.
Diehl Defence and Hensoldt announced on social media in July 2025 that they were increasing co-operation in ground-based air defence. The companies identified artificial intelligence (AI)-based target detection for the TRML-4D radar and fusion of sensor data as areas of collaboration.
A Hensoldt spokesperson told Janes in October 2025 that it was increasing production of the TRML-4D at a new site in Ulm, Germany, beginning in 2027. Around 1,000 TRML-4Ds are expected to be produced there annually from 2027, the spokesperson said.
According to Hensoldt's February release, the radar has shown âexceptionally good reconnaissance performance in Ukraineâ. In July 2025, an undisclosed number of the TRML-4D radars and Spexer 2000 3D MkIII shortârange radars were to be delivered to Ukraine as part of a EUR340 million (USD401 million) package. Between 24 February 2022 and 17 April 2025, the German government funded the provision of at least 16 Hensoldt TRML-4D air surveillance radars to Ukraine.
The TRML-4D is a C-band (4â8 GHz) AESA radar designed for ground-based air defence (GBAD). It can detect and track around 1,500 targets at ranges up to 250 km and altitudes up to 30 km.
