German-based defence manufacturer Hensoldt will produce TRML-4D air surveillance radars and Spexer ground and coastal surveillance radars at its new production site in Ulm, Germany, a company spokesperson confirmed to Janes on 2 October.
Starting from 2027, around 1,000 radars are expected to be produced annually at the new facility, the spokesperson confirmed.
The company has invested “a mid-double-digit million-euro amount” in the new production site in Ulm, according to a 2 October press release from Hensoldt. An industrial hall has already been leased and converted.
“Our main customers – above all the German Armed Forces – have urgent needs, and under the current structures, we are not in a position to meet these requirements. Therefore, expanding our capacities is not only necessary but also without alternative,” Hensoldt chief financial officer (CFO) Christian Ladurner said in the press release.
At its existing site in Ulm, Hensoldt has approximately 3,000 employees and develops and produces radars, electronic warfare (EW) systems, and components. A company spokesperson declined to comment on the number of radars being produced at the plant, citing the current security situation.
The TRLM-4D is a C-band (4–8 GHz) active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar designed for ground-based air defence (GBAD).
The Spexer is a family of X-band (8–12 GHz) AESA radars and frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radars based on digital beam-forming (DBF) technology. The 2000 3D MkIII is designed for ground, sea, and low-flying air targets, including unmanned aircraft systems (UASs), unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), and missiles. It is capable of tracking more than 300 targets within a 120° arc.
