The Netherlands plans to sign a contract for the Leopard 2A8 main battle tank (MBT) on 14 May, Commando Materieel en IT (Materiel and IT Command: COMMIT) spokesperson Arvid Staarink told Janes on 30 April.

The tanks will be ordered with Germany under a Common Procurement Agreement, a government-to-government agreement requiring no tender to be released by the customer but rather negotiations through the Bundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) for the same tanks without modifications as the Bundeswehr is procuring, according to KNDS Deutschland.

Dutch State Secretary for Defence Gijs Tuinman detailed his country's procurement of at least 46 Leopard 2A8 MBTs in co-operation with Germany in a letter to parliament on 14 October 2024. This followed his announcement of the procurement in the 5 September Defensienota (Defence Memorandum) 2024.

The tanks are scheduled to enter service in 2027–30, with a budget of EUR1–2.5 billion (USD1.1–2.8 billion), the Dutch Ministry of Defence (MoD) said on its website on 14 October.

The Leopard 2A8s will equip a tank battalion manned by 500 soldiers, most of whom must be recruited. Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans and his German counterpart, Boris Pistorius, signed a letter of intent in Brussels on 11 April for the battalion to be based at Bergen-Hohne in Germany, where the NATO training area offers large enough training and shooting ranges for realistic training that are not available in the Netherlands.
