Northrop Grumman signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Romania's state-owned holding company Romarm to co-produce the Ground/Air Task-Oriented Radar (G/ATOR) mobile radar system for the country's air force, the companies announced in 1 July releases.
The MOU's value, production volume, timeframe, and future assembly locations were not disclosed. The radar systems, which will be produced in Romania, will be commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products. According to information on the Romarm website, the system will “strengthen the operational and surveillance capabilities of the armed forces”. It will also provide interoperability with command-and-control (C2) systems used by NATO countries.
The 360º air-surveillance system can detect, track, and identify cruise missiles, various types of aircraft and rockets, artillery, and mortar fire, according to Northrop Grumman.
The G/ATOR is an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar with operating modes including air-defence surveillance and ground control interception, weapons cueing, and counter-battery, as per Janes C4ISR & Mission Systems: Land . The radar system's operating frequency is 2–4 GHz, which is in the S-band.
