Saab Training and Simulation has developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based training data analysis application and launched it at the 2025 Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC 25) held in Orlando in December.
The new application is called Training Data Insights (TDI). Speaking to Janes, Ylva Linderstam, information security compliance manager at Saab Training and Simulation, explained that the aim of the application is to provide automated after-action review (AAR) that can also be interrogated. The system will import existing data from live-training events held in Exercise Control (EXCON) and this can be enriched from other data sources such as doctrine, manuals, geographical and climate data, and exercise objectives.
Linderstam said there are different kinds of analytical tools within the application, “some statistical, some machine learning, and some generative AI”. She said the latter is a blend of existing large language models, which Saab has customised with its own algorithms, vocabulary, and training. “The results provide [the] observer/controllers with much better ‘hot debrief' tools and much more comprehensive final AARs,” she said.
She added that TDI reinforces subject matter experts supporting training as it can provide the data to back up their impressions based on their experience.
The results from TDI make training more measurable and more comparable, Linderstam said, and can be used to track and assess readiness, improve training design, and develop doctrine.
