UK-based Spectra Group has launched a new mobile troposcatter that can provide secure and high-bandwidth data communications to navies.
This troposcatter, named Troposcatter on the Move (TOTM), was unveiled at the Indo Defence 2025 exhibition held in Jakarta from 11 to 14 June. Spectra Group announced that the TOTM has been developed in collaboration with the US-based companies Comtech and BATS Wireless.
The TOTM enables ship-to-shore and ship-to-ship communications even when the ships are on the move. In contrast to satellite-based systems, the TOTM âoperates independently of GPS and offers a critical advantage in contested or denied environmentsâ, Spectra Group said.
This system can be particularly useful for Indo-Pacific militaries as they face challenges in achieving seamless connectivity across vast island chains and coastal territories, the company added.
The TOTM has been developed by equipping Comtech's Compact Over-the-Horizon Mobile Expeditionary Terminal (COMET) troposcatter with BATS' electronically steerable antennas (ESAs) into a single, fully integrated terminal, Spectra Group said.
According to Comtech, COMET has an operational configuration weight of about 25 kg. It can establish line-of-sight (LOS), obstructed LOS (OLOS), and beyond LOS (BLOS) links up to 60 km at data rates of 5â60 Mbps. COMET can operate a single stream from 946 kbps to 105 Mbps or a dual stream from 1.9 to 210 Mbps.
Spectra Group said the TOTM improves the operational effectiveness of COMET.
