RTX company Raytheon was awarded a USD1.7 billion US Department of Defense (DoD) contract to deliver nine Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensors (LTAMDSs) for the US Army and Poland, according to a 23 September RTX press release.
Poland is the first international customer to add LTAMDS to its air defence, as per the release. The contract includes engineering services, spares, support, development, and testing.
According to a US DoD contract announcement on 28 August, Raytheon was awarded a more than USD1.7 billion modification to a contract to support the low-rate initial production of LTAMDS. This brought the cumulative total face value of the contract to USD3.789 billion; the estimated date for completion is December 2029, according to the DoD.
Raytheon began transitioning to production of its LTAMDS after completing eight flight tests and achieving the US DoD's Major Capability Acquisition Milestone C, the company announced in April 2025.
At that time, RTX also said it had already delivered the first six LTAMDSs to the US Army via a 2019 contract. Raytheon said its annual production of the system is 12 units per year.
On 31 July 2024, the US DoD approved the Foreign Military Sale (FMS) of LTAMDS to Poland for a fixed-price incentive USD2.09 billion, as per previous Janes reporting. In September 2023, Poland's then Minister of National Defence Mariusz Błaszczak approved a letter of acceptance to procure 12 LTAMDSs along with 48 Patriot launchers and a stock of Patriot Advanced Capability (PAC)-3 missiles.
