Helsinki-based technology company Varjo showcased the refreshed version of its XR-4 series mixed-reality (MR) headsets at the 2025 Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC 25) held in Orlando in December, and demonstrated possible future developments of the technology.

Mikko Luhtava, Varjo chief marketing officer, speaking from Orlando, told Janes that the key company focus at the show was to demonstrate that, while the headsets were already in use with customers, the technology and hardware were ready for wide-scale market adoption. He noted that, apart from Varjo's own display the headsets were in use on 55 other company stands at the exhibition, and many of these were on simulators that were connected across the show floor.

Patrick Wyatt, Varjo chief product officer, said that the headset refreshments were the result of two years of feedback from users since the XR-4 was released. The ergonomics had been improved to provide a firmer fit, and the MR experience has been improved by altering the area covered by the pass-through cameras. This now focused on the working area in front of the wearer, so that “the MR sweet spot is a bit lower down than before”, he said.

Wyatt added that the ability to integrate the headset into systems had been improved so it could be configured from a command-line headset. This means that “there is no requirement for new interfaces, it is simple for system integrators to incorporate the headset into a system and the end-user experience is improved”, he said.
