Danish company Weibel Scientific has signed a contract with the Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) to deliver four Xenta-M5 radar systems to the Royal Danish Army, with the first scheduled to arrive in quarter four of 2027, according to Weibel's 5 December press release.
The remaining units of the Xenta-M5 radar are expected to be delivered in 2028. The Xenta-M5 X-band very short-range air defence (VSHORAD) radars for ground-based air defence (GBAD) will be mounted on Rheinmetall's all-terrain vehicles and integrated with Terma's command-and-control (C2) system, as per the release. The radars will be delivered to the 1st Brigade of the Royal Danish Army.
Danish firm Terma is responsible for the integration of the radars into the wider air-defence system. Terma signed a framework agreement with DALO for all air-defence system integration and advisory services on future air and missile defence procurement for the next 30 years, according to a 19 January 2023 Terma press release. Under the agreement Terma is tasked with integrating all subsystems such as radars, vehicles, and weapons into a single air-defence system, as per the 2023 release. Many of the subsystems are commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) items.
The Xenta-M5 is a Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar with Doppler processing, which can detect, track, and classify different types of aerial threats, both fast-moving, and low- and slow-flying small targets, according to the company's technical specification document. The instrumented range is a nominal 75 km and its elevation coverage is 60°.
The radar features an inertial navigation system (INS) integration for search-on-the-move (SOTM) capabilities and identification friend or foe (IFF) integration, as per the company document.
