Aselsanʼs Göksur air-defence system has intercepted a sea-skimming target for the first time during a live firing test, the Turkish company announced in a press release on 7 October. Janes understands the firing took place on 4 October.
During the test, a Göksur imaging infrared missile (IIR) fitted with a high-resolution IIR seeker was fired by a Göksur 100-N VLS (Vertical Launch System) from the Sinop test range on Türkiyeʼs northern Black Sea coast guided by Aselsanʼs Güdü datalink during its mid-course phase and autonomously locked onto its target in the terminal phase, scoring a direct hit on and completely destroying its target at a range of 11 km, according to the Turkish company.
Göksur was developed by Aselsan and is fitted with an IIR with advanced counter-countermeasures that was developed by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK) Defense Industries Research and Development Institute (SAGE).
Aselsan said, “The Göksur product family delivers high-efficiency point air defence for surface platforms against threats such as sea-skimming anti-ship and cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and combat aircraft. By modernising shipboard missile-defence architectures and establishing a robust protective layer, the system enhances the naval deterrence and self-defence capabilities of Türkiye and its allies.”
The press release quoted Aselsan president and CEO Ahmet Akyol as saying, “Türkiye has reached a new milestone in its naval defence capability. This success not only strengthens our naval defence and deterrence but also underscores Aselsanʼs commitment to developing indigenous, game-changing systems that ensure the operational superiority of armed forces.”
