AUSA 2024: GM Defense debuts new tactical vehicle

GM Defense's next-generation tactical vehicle designed for increased range and energy generation is being shown at the Association of the United States Army 's(AUSA) conference, executives told Janes .

The new vehicle – based on the commercial vehicle Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD ZR2 truck – has a curb weight of nearly twice the Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV) and has a range of nearly 50 miles more, vice-president of business development Pete Johnson said during an interview on 11 October. It was designed to address a global demand for signature maintenance and logistics tail simplification, he added.

From the commercial vehicle, GM Defense made several modifications, including taking brakes from a Hummer electric vehicle and adding a new propulsion system and an off-road package.

“A curb weight of 10,000 lb won't prevent it from being sling loadable by a CH-47 Chinook helicopter, but its size will prevent it from fitting inside one,” Johnson said. However, the heavier weight enables more energy generation to power more force protection or command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) capabilities.

Payload weight is 4,000 lb and it can generate exportable power for different mission systems. At the conference from 14 to 16 October, GM will display the vehicle kitted with a remote weapon station, Javelin surface-to-air missile, a tethered unmanned aircraft system, and a multilauncher that can fire four separate loitering munitions.
