Australian Razer precision-guided munition strikes targets during testing

The Razer Low-Cost Precision Guided Munition (LCPGM) under development by BAE Systems Australia has completed a series of flight trials intended to demonstrate its ability to launch from airborne platforms and strike targets, the company announced in a release on 5 September.

The LCPGM has “proven its operational effectiveness with direct strikes on multiple targets during the latest round of flight trials”, the company said. It added that the project team “completed flight certification in Cloncurry, Queensland, in August 2025 after almost three years of development”.

The Razer was first unveiled as a concept at the Avalon Airshow in 2023 as a low-cost munition designed to transform a 40–50 kg standard non-guided munition into a precision air-launched weapon.

Since then, the Razer “has proven it can accept payloads from 7 kg to 43 kg and attack a target effectively”, said Leon MacLaren, programme manager for Future Weapons at BAE Systems Australia, in September 2025.

“The customer could implement mortars, 5 inch shells, 155 mm shells, or even their own special-to-type warhead and fuze,” he added.

The Razer gives the military a low-cost option to “increase the range and accuracy” of the munitions up to a 155 mm artillery shell, according to BAE Systems Australia. This is achieved by integrating the munition or shell inside the Razer glide vehicle, which comprises a cylindrical body and wing kit, tail control unit, and a flight-guidance system.

“New for this year's flight trials is a mission planning system,” the company added.

The glide vehicle is designed to be launched from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or helicopters.
