The Australian Defence Force's (ADF's) Joint Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) Directorate has achieved initial operating capability, enhancing the force's operational effectiveness.

The Joint PNT Directorate – established in April 2024 – enables the ADF to operate in GPS-degraded or denied environments, the Australian Department of Defence (DoD) said on 25 August.

While GPS has been the primary source of PNT data, growing threats such as jamming, spoofing, and anti-satellite weapons are challenging the ADF's reliance on GPS, the DoD added.

Head of the Joint PNT Directorate Group Captain Tim Ireland said, “Whether it's ensuring the accuracy of precision munitions or synchronising distributed command-and-control, our warfighters must have confidence in their PNT data – even when GPS is compromised.”

The Joint PNT Directorate leads resilient PNT capability development including through stakeholder engagement, training, test, and evaluation. The directorate is also responsible for advancing PNT standards and governance within the ADF, and ensures integration of resilient PNT into future acquisitions, the DoD said.

“We regularly conduct GPS jamming activities to assess how systems behave under denied conditions. This testing helps operators and capability managers understand where their systems are vulnerable, and how to mitigate those risks through tactics, training, and technology,” Gp Capt Ireland said.
