Brazilian Army establishes first anti-tank unit

The Brazilian Army has formally activated its first dedicated front-line anti-tank warfare unit, according to a 16 December announcement from the army.
The 1st Mechanized Anti-tank Company (1ª Companhia Anticarro Mecanizada: 1ª Cia AC Mec) of Osasco in State of São Paulo will initially consist of two platoons, each equipped with four launchers of the Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Spike LR2 long-range manportable anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) system. They will be joined in 2025 by another two platoons equipped with the locally developed MAX 1.2 AC medium-range manportable anti-tank system.
The 1ª Cia AC Mec unit is subordinate to the 11th Mechanized Infantry Brigade of Campinas, State of São Paulo. It fields nearly 150 fully professional troops.
It will deliver rapidly deployable anti-tank capability in support of Strategic Projection Forces, the army said in the statement.
The MAX 1.2 AC missile (formerly the MSS 1.2 AC) measures 1.38 m in length, with a diameter of 130 mm. It weighs 15.4 kg and can travel a maximum range of 3.2 km, SIATT told Janes on 4 December.
