Defence company Marine and Remote Sensing Solutions (MARSS) has revealed a new artificial intelligence (AI) capability to help autonomous management of unmanned ground, sea, and air vehicles, the company announced at the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) 2025 exhibition held in London from 9 to 12 September.

Forming a largely unseen part of MARSS' NiDAR command-and-control (C2) software, Autonomous Mission Management (AMM) is intended to allow entirely autonomous missions to be conducted.

Johannes Pinl, founder and CEO of MARSS, told Janes that a use case successfully tested was the detection of a possibly hostile vehicle at the limit of a sensor's range. AMM autonomously tasked an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to the area to do further reconnaissance.

MARSS has an existing customer trialling AMM. In tests in August 2025, one operator was able to oversee 10 UAVs operating automatically.

Seeing AMM as an initial step on the road to more autonomous operations, Pinl added that while modern, commercially available processors already provided the power for autonomous situational awareness, MARSS was focusing research and development efforts on C2 of these systems.

“We see in Ukraine, as elsewhere, [that] it's still really one operator, or pilot, per UAV, and they are short of these pilots. AMM should reduce the cognitive burden on operators further so that at least some missions can be conducted without operator involvement until, for example, a target is found,” Pinl said.

While NiDAR would conduct multisensor fusion for decision makers in command posts, Pinl recommended some processing power be on board for each unmanned vehicle.
