The first Embraer A-29N Super Tucano light attack and trainer aircraft for Portugal were transferred from their Brazilian production site on 25 August, the manufacturer announced.

Imagery was released showing at least two of the 12 Super Tucano aircraft ordered by the Portuguese Air Force (Força Aérea Portuguesa: FAP) beginning the approximately 8,000 km ferry flight from Embraer's Gavião Peixoto site in Brazil to the facilities of Embraer's Portuguese subsidiary OGMA.

“Today, the first Portuguese Air Force A-29Ns took off from our facility in Gavião Peixoto, Brazil, flying to OGMA, Portugal, where they will receive the necessary equipment to operate in accordance with NATO operational requirements. These first advanced training and light attack aircraft are part of a contract for 12 aircraft that will equip the Portuguese Air Force,” Embraer said.

In December 2024, Portugal became the first customer of the NATO-standard Super Tucano, signing an approximately EUR200 million (USD226.9 million at the time) deal for its 12 aircraft, a flight simulator, and support.

With deliveries now under way, all 12 aircraft will be with the FAP “in two to three years”, according to Embraer officials. The FAP intends to use the turboprop-powered type to fulfil close air support missions for combined operations in low-threat scenarios in Africa, as well as for training.
