Estonia-based Milrem Robotics has integrated Ukrainian defence company Frontline's Buria remote weapon station (RWS), equipped with a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher, onto its Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry System (THeMIS) unmanned ground vehicle (UGV).

Revealed in January as Milrem's first armed UGV to be supplied to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), the company said in a 12 August press release that the integration was validated during live-fire trials in Ukraine under operationally relevant conditions.

Milrem added that the Buria RWS on the THeMIS platform achieved precise target engagement at distances of up to 1,100 m, while maintaining stability and target tracking.

Further live-fire and other testing will continue in the coming weeks to assess performance across a range of battlefield scenarios, Edge Group subsidiary Milrem said, adding that the data collected will help inform future system upgrades and potential deployment strategies.

The 1,630 kg (without payload) THeMIS has a maximum speed of 20 km/h, running up to 1.5 h with a 1.5 km line-of-sight control range.

The Buria grenade launcher RWS has been in service with military units since January and is now in serial production. According to Frontline, the 47 kg Buria RWS with its Mk 19, 40 mm grenade launcher can be remotely controlled from up to 100 m away via a wired video link.

Mounted either on a tripod, or on a UGV or another vehicle, the Buria can be deployed in 12 minutes. Targeting can be conducted through an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) and the Ukrainian Kropyva combat control system.
