South Korea's Hanwha Aerospace and Milrem Robotics are jointly developing a variant of the Estonian company's THeMIS unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) for the Republic of Korea Army (RoKA).
A Hanwha Aerospace spokesperson told Janes on 3 November that the new UGV, named THeMIS-K, is “currently under review to reflect various [RoKA] operational requirements”.
“[THeMIS-K's] basic specification is based on the existing THeMIS platform, and it is planned to maintain the same core performance,” the spokesperson added.
According to the spokesperson, Hanwha Aerospace is also collaborating with Milrem Robotics to develop a new medium-sized UGV for the global market. However, the company did not disclose the details of this new UGV.
The new developments follow a memorandum of understanding that Hanwha Aerospace signed with Milrem Robotics in February 2025 to jointly develop tracked robotic combat vehicles (RCVs).
A Milrem spokesperson told Janes in April that the focus of collaboration with Hanwha Aerospace is to develop a tracked remote combat vehicle in the infantry fighting vehicle (IFV)-size class.
Milrem's THeMIS family of multirole modular UGVs weighs 1,630 kg and has a maximum speed of 20 km/h. It can be armed with various weapons including light or heavy machine guns, 40 mm grenade launchers, 30 mm autocannons, and anti-tank guided missiles.
