Hensoldt and Indra Group have built the first ECRS Mk 1 Step 1 radar sets for German and Spanish Eurofighter combat aircraft, the industrial partners announced on 27 June.

The German and Spanish industrial subcontractors to Airbus for the ECRS Mk 1 electronically scanned (E-Scan)/active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar programme to equip their national Eurofighter fleets said that they have completed build on the first sets to feature the new subsystems.

“In April 2024, the military customers in Germany and Spain decided to introduce advanced subsystems for the Processor and the Antenna Power Supply and Control (APSC) into the ECRS Mk 1 Step 1,” the partners said in a joint statement. “The Eurofighter Radar Mk 1 consortium partners Hensoldt and Indra have [now] completed the production of the first radars with the advanced subsystems for the APSC”.

The ECRS E-Scan is also sometimes referred to as Captor-E, named after the Captor-M mechanically scanned radar that preceded it. The baseline E-Scan radar is the Leonardo UK ECRS Mk 0, and is the system for Kuwait and Qatar as well as initially for Luftwaffe Tranche 2 and 3 Eurofighters. Airbus, through Hensoldt (Germany) and Indra (Spain), has constructed a new digital multichannel receiver to transform the ECRS Mk 1 Step 0 into the ECRS Mk 1 Step 1 (the ECRS Mk 1 Step 0 will be at the same standard as the radar for Kuwait and Qatar, but with some modifications, and will be the initial standard delivered to Spain and Germany).
