Japan trials new UGVs

Japan's Ministry of Defense (MoD) is conducting trials of Rheinmetall Mission Master SP and Milrem THeMIS unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) to meet a requirement in the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF).

The MoD said in a social media post on 3 October that the JGSDF is evaluating the basic performance and operational procedure of the two UGV platforms, which were ordered by the MoD in April 2024.

“[The] JGSDF has been strengthening its unmanned capabilities, including UGVs, which would enable sustained operations while minimising risks to personnel by accelerating evaluation for full-scale introduction,” the MoD added.

The procurement is aligned with a document issued by the MoD in November 2024 – titled Fundamental Reinforcement of Japan's Defense Capabilities – which outlined requirement to reinforce the JGSDF's unmanned capabilities.

Rheinmetall said at the time of its order from the MoD that the company would supply three Mission Master SP UGVs to the JGSDF by January 2025 specifically for testing purposes.

Rheinmetall is partnered with local contractor Marubeni Aerospace to supply the UGVs, which are equipped with payload modules including cargo, surveillance, and a remote-controlled weapon station (RCWS). The contract also includes a long-term support and training programme and spare parts, Rheinmetall added.

Details of the MoD's contract with Milrem have not been disclosed.

The 8×8 Mission Master SP is designed to fulfil transport, fire-support, and reconnaissance roles. The vehicle weighs 1,134 kg and has a maximum ground speed of 40 km/h. It can carry payloads up to 1,000 kg, reduced to 300 kg in amphibious operations. The UGV is powered by electric lithium-ion batteries.
