The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) conducted new airstrikes against the Cambodian military on 8 December amid border clashes between the two neighbouring Southeast Asian countries. Both sides have accused the other of restarting the conflict, following their five-day war in July.

Thailand said the strikes were a response to Cambodian military build up along their shared border. An RTAF spokesperson said assessments at around 0300 h local time on 8 December showed the Royal Cambodian Army (RCA) mobilising weaponry as well as repositioning combat units, and preparing fire-support elements along the border.

A Royal Thai Army (RTA) spokesperson said the deployed Cambodian weaponry included BM-21 Grad 122 mm rocket launchers, whose standard projectile is the 9M22 rocket, which has a range of about 20 km and can be equipped with high explosive (HE) fragmentation, smoke, incendiary, and chemical warheads.

The RTA's 2nd Army Area, which is responsible for the northeastern region of Thailand, said that in addition to the military build up, aerial imagery “indicated” that Cambodian forces had “designated targets for their supporting fire weapons”.

The 2nd Army Area said designated targets included Satuek Airfield, also known as Buri Ram Airport, and Prasat Hospital in Surin province. The RTA's spokesperson said these designated targets were 30 km from the shared border.
