The United Kingdom has awarded BAE Systems GBP453.5 million (USD609.5 million) for full productionof the Leonardo European Common Radar System (ECRS) Mk 2 aboard Eurofighter Typhoon combat aircraft for the Royal Air Force (RAF).
Announced by the prime contractor on 22 January, the agreement includes an initial GBP204.6 million contract for the production and integration of the active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar awarded in June 2025.
“The contract follows a successful programme of development and testing, enabled through long-term UK investment, and marks a major step forward in the RAF's Typhoon capability,” BAE Systems said. “The state-of-the-art radar, known as the ECRS Mk 2, will deliver enhanced electronic warfare capability, allowing the aircraft to detect, identify, and track multiple targets in the air and on the ground.”
The contract covers 38 new radar sets, which when combined with two test sets that are to be refurbished, will see the RAF's 40 Typhoon Tranche 3 aircraft upgraded with the new capability by 2030.
The ECRS Mk 2is the UK-specific version of a series of AESA/electronically scanned (E-Scan) radars being developed by Leonardo with participation from Hensoldt and Indra for the partner and export customers of the Eurofighter under the Phase 4 Enhancement (P4E) performance modernisation package.
