Pratt & Whitney is ahead of schedule on the F135 Engine Core Upgrade (ECU) programme, which “will deliver significant improvements in performance and capabilities” for the F-35, including upcoming block upgrades and multiple weapon systems and sensors, Jill Albertelli, president of Military Engines for Pratt & Whitney, told reporters during a media briefing on 15 September, ahead of the Air & Space Forces Association's (AFA's) 2025 Air, Space & Cyber Conference from 22 to 24 September. Furthermore, it is designed for sustainment through the existing F135 engine global network, she said.

The ECU programme is “progressing extremely well”, Albertelli said, noting that Pratt & Whitney is meeting each incremental review as planned and is “ahead of projected timelines”, without providing further details.

“We're confident that this is going to be successful with sufficient funding and stability of the funding so that we can continue to hit all the programme milestones and utilise the maximum design space, so it's not just in support of current blocks that are being incorporated on the jet, but rather future opportunities and future block requirements as well,” she told reporters.

The ECU in part addresses shortcomings in electrical power and cooling on existing F135 engines, providing around 25% more electrical power and cooling to extend the lifespan of current engines as well as meet the requirements of the Block 4 upgrade, Janes reported in July 2024. Service entry is anticipated in 2029 for both newbuild aircraft and as a retrofit.

The company continues to work on the XA103 engine for the US Air Force's Next-Generation Adaptive Propulsion (NGAP) programme in support of its air superiority goals, Albertelli said.
