German defence company Helsing, best known for its unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), is acquiring Australian unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) maker Blue Ocean, in an attempt to increase its maritime activities.
The two companies have collaborated since October 2024, in May 2025 unveiling their SG-1 Fathom UUV, designed with Helsing's Luna autonomy software to monitor undersea activity for months at a time.
The acquisition, announced on 8 October, will integrate Blue Ocean's hardware and manufacturing capabilities with Helsing's artificial intelligence (AI), and its team into Helsing. Blue Ocean's operations will continue in the United Kingdom and Australia.
Helsing and Blue Ocean said they would accelerate the development and mass production of autonomous platforms for the protection of the underwater battlespace.
The companies said the acquisition will occur by means of a members' scheme of arrangement under Australian law and is subject to court, regulatory, and shareholder approval.
