India's Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has won a contract from the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) to supply the Indian Army with the BvS10 Sindhu, an upgraded variant of BAE Systems' BvS10 Articulated All-Terrain Vehicle (AATV).
Under the deal, which was announced on 19 November, L&T will licence manufacture the vehicles from its Armoured Systems Complex in Hazira, Gujarat, on India's northwest coast, with technical and design support provided by BAE Systems HĂ€gglunds, the original manufacturer of the BvS10. L&T will also provide integrated logistic support services for the vehicles.
Details about the value of the deal and the number of vehicles to be supplied to the Indian Army were not disclosed. However, Janes understands that the contract, which was signed earlier in November, features an initial 18 BvS10 Sindhu vehicles, with deliveries to start within 24 months.
Under the deal, at least 60% of the content of the BvS10 Sindhu will be required to be sourced from Indian industry in alignment with Indian defence procurement requirements. Sources told Janes that the indigenous content would likely surpass that 60% level over time.
According to L&T, the BvS10 Sindhu is an âupgraded variantâ of the BvS10 tailored for India's âterrain and climate, including high altitude, desert, marshland, and amphibious environmentsâ.
L&T added that the BvS10 Sindhu was selected for the Indian Army following the vehicle's completion of a series of trials in both âsea-level environments and high-altitude regionsâ. Janes understands that these trials took place in Gujarat and Ladakh, with the latter of these focused on high-altitude operations.
