Pentagon Budget 2026: DoD procurement plans hinge on reconciliation funding

The US Department of Defense (DoD) is seeking USD153.3 billion in procurement funding for fiscal year (FY) 2026, which is expected to increase to USD205.2 billion with an additional USD51.9 billion proposed in congressional budget reconciliation legislation, according to DoD budget documents published on 26 June.
The budget request seeks USD26.4 billion in discretionary funding for the US Army, with another USD2 billion proposed in the reconciliation bill; USD62.9 billion for the US Navy (USN) and Marine Corps (USMC), plus USD32.4 billion in reconciliation funding; USD57.6 billion for the US Air Force (USAF) and Space Force (USSF), with an additional USD10 billion in the reconciliation legislation, and USD6.3 billion in DoD-wide procurement funding, with USD7.6 billion proposed in the reconciliation bill, the documents show.
The USD153.3 billion requested is a decline from the USD167.8 billion enacted in the FY 2025 budget and less than the USD155.5 million authorised in FY 2022, according to budget documents. In some cases, lower levels of procurement funding appear to have been requested with the expectation that they would be filled in by the reconciliation bill.
Procurement spending increased to USD182.2 billion in FY 2023 before declining to USD171.1 billion in FY 2024 and USD167.8 billion in FY 2025, budget documents show. The FY 2026 budget depends on the reconciliation bill to reach the highest level over the last five years, although the final figure will depend on the legislation that is passed. During a media briefing on 26 June, senior defence officials noted that reconciliation funding can be spent over 10 years and can be disbursed faster than monies in the base budget. This could be helpful given the typical delays in passing government spending bills.
