Saab announced in a press release on 3 April that it has received an order from BAE Systems Hägglunds worth SEK880 million (USD89 million) for the Universal Tank and Anti-Aircraft System (UTAAS) sighting and fire-control system (FCS) for Combat Vehicle 90 (CV90) infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs).
Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab's surveillance business area, said, “UTAAS is a versatile sight and fire-control system for tanks and combat vehicles. It provides high hit probability against all ground targets, as well as helicopters and high-speed aircraft. This is a much-desired capability by armed forces worldwide.”
UTAAS has a thermal imager, laser rangefinder, and fire-control computer and is supplemented by a turret angle sensor and an interface to the gunlaying system to provide an independent line of sight, according to Janes C4ISR & Mission Systems: Land . The system is specifically designed to shorten reaction times and achieve a high hit probability against moving targets when firing from a moving vehicle. When combined with an advanced FCS, it can target moving ground targets and helicopters.
