Bundeswehr receives first Eagle V 6×6 medium protected medical vehicle
The Bundeswehr has received its first Eagle V 6×6 mgSanKfz from GDELS. (GDELS)
The Bundeswehr and General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) on 7 July announced the official handover of the first Eagle V 6×6 mittlere geschützte Sanitätskraftfahrzeug (mgSanKfz) medium protected medical vehicle to Germany during medical exercise Informationslehrübung Sanitätsdienst (ILÜ San) 2025 in Feldkirchen, Lower Bavaria, on 4 July. The vehicle will replace the Bundeswehr's Duro 3 Yak medical vehicle over the next 12 months.
The Bundeswehr said on its website that the transport companies of its central medical service's medical regiments would receive 77 of the new vehicles and the German Navy the remaining three. These vehicles are financed by the EUR100 billion (USD117 billion) Sondervermögen Bundeswehr special fund established after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022.
Asked what improvements the new vehicle offers over the Duro 3 Yak it is replacing, a GDELS spokesperson told Janes on 9 July 2025, “The Eagle 6×6 mgSanKfz is a much more modern vehicle, delivering superior mobility and protection. It offers more space, better ergonomics, and the latest medical technology. It can also carry two stretchers instead of one.”
The vehicle has a protected driver's cab and transport compartment for a crew of four, with the option of including an emergency physician. It is equipped with a stretcher loading system for one or two patients, according to GDELS. It has a 229 kW diesel engine, chassis with the Eagle's De Dion suspension, and third-axle steering.
In comparison, the Duro 3 Yak has a 184 kW diesel engine producing a speed of 106 km/h and has a crew of three, with the ability to carry one wounded soldier in a stretcher or two sitting down.
