The Czech Ministry of Defence (MoD) is preparing to order Leopard 2A8s by the end of September after it announced on its website on 12 August that its board approved the procurement of the main battle tanks (MBTs). After the approval of a proposal submitted by Minister of Defence Jana Černochová to the Czech government, Prague can join the framework agreement between the German MoD and KNDS Deutschland, which will be amended.

In the first phase, 44 Leopard 2A8s, including command variants, will be purchased, with an option for 14 more. The Czech MoD values the procurement of 44 Leopard 2A8s at CZK32.76 billion (USD1.56 billion), including the active protection system, mine protection, integrated logistic support and spare parts, support management, documentation, and training.

Another contract on the ‘Bohemianisation' of the tanks will also be signed. The Czech MoD also plans to purchase up to 19 armoured vehicles in four different versions: engineering, recovery, armoured vehicle-launched bridge, and driver training, with negotiations under way with suppliers.
