The Estonian Defence Forces (EDF) has received six more CAESAR Mk I 6×6 155 mm self-propelled howitzers (SPHs), the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI) announced in a press release on 6 August. The SPHs will be assigned to the Estonian division's artillery regiment.
The deliveries complete Estonia's CAESAR procurement begun on 19 June 2024, when the ECDI signed contracts with the Direction Générale de l'Armement (DGA), the French defence procurement agency, and KNDS for 12 of the SPHs, with an option for more systems.
The first six CAESARs arrived in Estonia at the beginning of 2025, and the artillery regiment's second battery was manned by reservists in July during a training session.
The ECDI noted that CAESAR Mk I is a 155 mm indirect fire weapon that allows units to rapidly redeploy over long distances and engage targets at a range of over 40 km, with a standard calibre enabling it to use various NATO standard munitions. Its level of automation, combined with simplicity, allows gun crews to be trained in a few weeks, according to the ECDI, which added that its widespread use in various countries ensures long-term logistic support and the availability of spare parts.
In February, the first conscripts of the Estonian division's artillery battalion began learning to operate CAESAR as part of a battery subunit course, with the first live-fire exercises taking place in March using the Estonian Tooru fire-control system.
