The Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence (MND) has signed a contract with KNDS Deutschland for 12 Leguan armoured vehicle launched bridges (AVLBs) mounted on the Leopard 2A8 main battle tank (MBT) chassis, the ministry and German company announced on 28 January. The EUR210 million (over USD250 million) contract includes one 26 m and two 14 m Leguan bridges, training and simulators, an integrated logistics package, special tools, and spare parts.
Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Robertas Kaunas said, “Leguan bridges will significantly increase the mobility and tactical flexibility of the Lithuanian Armed Forces on the battlefield. If necessary, armoured vehicles will be able to quickly overcome natural and manmade obstacles, which is critically important in modern warfare. This acquisition strengthens the defence of both Lithuania and the entire eastern flank of NATO.”
The Leguan system is capable of automatically laying and retrieving 26 or 14 m bridges in military load class (MLC) 80, day and night, from a protected cabin, according to KNDS Deutschland. The Lithuanian MND said on its website that the system can build a bridge in less than six minutes and that it is usually operated by a two-person crew, although automation makes one crew member possible.
