GM Defense showed off new variants of its Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV) during a media event at the General Motors (GM) Milford Proving Ground in Michigan on 1 October.

The ISV and the ISV-Utility (ISV-U), based on the Chevrolet Colorado midsize pickup and powered by a Duramax turbodiesel engine, are intended for light infantry and mobile brigade combat teams (BCTs), Stephen duMont, president of GM Defense, told reporters during the event.

Janes test drove an ISV-U and a Colorado on an offroad track during the event. Both vehicles rode smoothly despite the terrain. The ISV-U was easy to drive, replicating much of the experience of driving the Colorado. This significantly reduces the training time for troops, GM engineers said.

The ISV-Heavy (ISV-H), based on the larger Chevrolet Silverado pickup, is a heavy-duty hybrid truck using the same turbodiesel engine as the baseline ISV. It is equipped with a 100 kW h battery for silent operations and to bring energy onto the battlefield, duMont said. The ISV-H has a gross vehicle weight of about 14,000 lb, including about 4,000 lb of payload, according to GM Defense.
