Singapore Airshow 2026: ST Engineering unveils Terrex s5 HED

ST Engineering has unveiled the latest iteration of the Terrex s5 8×8 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) at Singapore Airshow 2026.

The variant, known as the Terrex s5 HED (hybrid electric drive), was unveiled days after ST Engineering announced that it has signed a contract with Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) for the IFV.

ST Engineering representatives who spoke to Janes at the airshow said the most important differentiator between the s5 and the s5 HED is the latter's vastly increased electrical power generation capacity.

The original Terrex s5, unveiled at Singapore Airshow 2024, uses a conventional engine‑alternator arrangement capable of supplying up to around 20 kW of electrical power.

In contrast, the Terrex s5 HED incorporates a hybrid electric drive system, combining a downsized engine with a generator and a substantial high‑voltage battery pack.

This configuration allows the HED to generate more than 400 kW of electrical output, which is around 20 times that of the original variant.

The Terrex s5 HED is able to accommodate more sophisticated sensors, electronic warfare payloads, and emerging mission systems such as counter‑unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) equipment without straining the platform's power reserves.

Despite the addition of the hybrid drive and its associated battery pack, the Terrex s5 HED offers about 15% more internal space than the original Terrex s5.

Engineers have achieved this by reorganising the interior floor plan and optimising component placement, which has allowed the crew cabin and troop compartment to be configured more efficiently.
