Sweden buys more M3 amphibious bridges

The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) signed a contract with General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) on 5 September for a fourth batch of M3 amphibious bridges and ferry systems. The FMV said on its website on 6 September that it ordered nine more systems, designated Amfbro 400, and spare parts worth approximately SEK470 million (USD45.8 million).
An FMV spokesperson told Janes on 6 September that the main contract for Amfbro 400s was placed in June 2022 and that a total of 34 systems have been ordered, with deliveries scheduled from November 2024 to November 2029. In addition to spare parts, the FMV has ordered documentation (instruction, maintenance manuals and schedules, and an illustrated parts catalogue), special tools and test equipment, initial training, maintenance instructors, and preventive workshops, the spokesperson said.
GDELS said in a press release on 5 September that the all-terrain M3 can bridge 400 m of water obstacles and is ready for use within minutes.
The company told Janes on 5 September that the M3 units will be produced at the GDELS-Bridge Systems site in Kaiserslautern, southwestern Germany.
In its press release, GDELS noted that the Swedish Armed Forces already operates the Improved Ribbon Bridge (IRB) pontoon system and coupling adapters for the combined operation of both bridge types, making it possible to conduct multinational operations with the US, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and Latvia, which use the same systems.
