Sweden relieves Danish contingent of NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia

A Swedish battalion landed in the Latvian port of Riga early on 18 January to relieve Denmark's contingent of NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia (MNB-LVA), the two countries' armed forces and the Latvian Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on their websites the same day. The Swedish Armed Forces said it was Sweden's largest commitment yet since joining NATO on 7 March 2024.

The ship was escorted by the Swedish Air Force and units from the Swedish and Latvian navies. Latvian MoD and Swedish Armed Forces photos showed the roll-on/roll-off vessel being escorted by a Swedish Navy Visby corvette and trailed by a helicopter, and soldiers, CV9040 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), and Patria 8×8 XA-360 Armoured Modular Vehicles disembarking in Riga.

Drawn from the South Skåne Regiment's 71st Battalion, the mechanised infantry unit will contribute significant capabilities and firepower to MNB-LVA, according to the Swedish Armed Forces. A Swedish Armed Forces spokesperson told Janes
