Indonesia has commissioned its first Italian-built offshore patrol ship and the vessel is now in service as KRI Brawijaya with pennant number 320.

It was inducted into service at a delivery and commissioning ceremony on 2 July at Fincantieri's shipyard in Muggiano, Italy, the Indonesian Navy said in a statement released on the same day.

In the statement, the Indonesian Navy revealed that Brawijaya will operate with the service's second fleet command headquartered in Surabaya.

Brawijaya is the first of two multi-purpose offshore patrol ships (Pattugliatore Polivalente d'Altura: PPA) originally destined for the Italian Navy, and it was supposed to have been commissioned as ITS Marcantonio Colonna.

Fincantieri subsequently said in March 2024 that it had signed a EUR1.18 billion (USD1.39 billion) contract for two PPAs with the Indonesian Ministry of Defense (MoD).

With that, another vessel bound for the Italian Navy, which would have been in service as ITS Ruggiero di Lauria, is also re-assigned for the Indonesian Navy contract and it is now called Prabu Siliwangi with pennant number 321. This vessel is now being prepared for delivery to Indonesia.

The PPA is a 143 m frigate-like warship that can be configured for a wide spectrum of missions ranging from ‘light' low-tempo maritime surveillance operations to ‘full-combat' higher-end warfighting scenarios.

It is also referred to as the Thaon di Revel class and the Italian Navy has thus far inducted three units commissioned between March 2022 and September 2023.

The vessel has a top speed of 32 kt and can accommodate a crew complement of 171, according to the Indonesian Navy statement.
