Kongsberg Maritime has signed a contract with Turkish shipbuilder STM to supply fuelling-at-sea (FAS) and replenishment-at-sea (RAS) equipment for the Portuguese Navy's two future 137 m replenishment ships.

In December 2024, STM was awarded a contract for the ships, which are expected to enter service in 2028 and 2029 respectively. The contract was Türkiye's first military ship export to a European Union and NATO member state.

The 137 m replenishment ships are to have a full load displacement of 11,000 tonnes with two RAS stations amidships. The class will be capable of embarking 4,000 m3 of F-76 diesel fuel, 350 m3 of F-44 aviation fuel, 350 m3 of fresh water, and 700 m3 cargo, with space for up to six standard 20 ft containers on deck. Alongside the ships' primary replenishment and logistics roles, additional tasks will include command-and-control, medical support, amphibious operations support, humanitarian assistance, and search and rescue.

“We have supplied our RAS/FAS technology to many international naval platforms. For the [UK] Royal Navy this includes QE class [Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers], T23 [Duke (Type 23)-class frigates], T45 [Daring (Type 45)-class destroyers], T26 [City (Type 26)-class frigates], and some of the RFA [Royal Fleet Auxiliary] fleet. The most recent and one of our most significant contracts was for the five Fleet Solid Support ships [223 m Fleet Support Ships] for the Indian Navy,” Chris Nelson, naval sales director at Kongsberg Maritime, told Janes.
