Defense & Security 2025: IWI unveils ‘Boost' power system for AR-15/M4 rifles

Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) has unveiled its new ‘Boost' energy system, which has been engineered to transform AR-15/M4 rifles into “self-sustaining tactical power hubs”, the company has said.

Speaking to Janes at the Defense & Security 2025 show in Bangkok, an official from SK Group, the parent company of IWI, said the Boost system replaces the need for disposable batteries on AR-15/M4 standard rifles by delivering continuous power to the weapon for energy-dependent devices such as thermal sights, night-vision devices, laser designators, and other electronic systems.

“By using Boost, a soldier can multiply the life of regular batteries by three to five times,” the SK Group official said.

The official confirmed that Boost is already in military use but did not elaborate. Announced to coincide with the Defense & Security 2025 show in Bangkok, IWI is also promoting the system to Asia-Pacific operators as well as markets in the West.

IWI said the Boost system has been developed to meet the demands of sustained, electronics-intensive operations. The Boost module weighs less than 340 g and is integrated directly into the rifle's butt-stock, which IWI said preserves natural handling of the weapon as well as sight picture and firing ergonomics.

The system, which enables devices to switch automatically between internal and external power, houses a field-replaceable rechargeable Li-ion battery supported by an internal backup power bank. IWI said this ensures “uninterrupted power delivery, even if the primary battery is depleted”.

The company added, “The result is a 3–5x increase in operational runtime, reducing the number of batteries soldiers must carry and lightening their overall load.”
