NATO's JFC Norfolk to receive Palantir's Maven Smart System by end of May

NATO's Joint Force Command (JFC) Norfolk will receive Palantir's Maven Smart System (MSS) artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled software. It will be integrated starting in either April or May 2026, Vice Admiral James Morley, deputy commander of JFC Norfolk, told Janes on 13 March in Bardufoss, northern Norway, during Norwegian-led NATO Exercise ‘Cold Response 2026'.

“We're rolling out Maven Smart System across NATO to improve our situational understanding and decision making in all of our operational headquarters,” Vice Adm Morley said. He went on to add that it is already installed at Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFC Brunssum/ JFCBS) in the Netherlands, and at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Belgium. “We are at the foothills of understanding what it can do for us,” Vice Adm Morley said. He went on to add that the key will be in using artificial intelligence (AI) more generally as a way of “enhancing decision making” under clear constraints. “We just need to be careful in the manner that the system is enacting and, in a way, pouring data in and pulling data out,” he said.

In March 2025, the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) finalised the acquisition of Palantir's Maven Smart System NATO (MSS NATO). In a 14 April 2025 SHAPE press release announcing the March acquisition, NATO said that through “a wide range of AI applications – from large language models (LLMs) to generative and machine learning – MSS NATO enhances intelligence fusion and targeting, battlespace awareness and planning, and accelerated decision-making”.
