The Qatar Emiri Air Defence Forces (QEADF) are studying the practicalities of testing and deploying a Lockheed Martin Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery, a QEADF captain told Janes at the DIMDEX defence exhibition held in Doha, Qatar, from 19 to 22 January.

Next to a model of a THAAD battery at DIMDEX 2026, a QEADF sign said the deployment of a THAAD missile system battery was “one of the future projects currently under evaluation”.

“We have a potential THAAD deployment under study, to see what is possible,” the captain said. He added that THAAD would provide an extra, exoatmospheric layer of air defence for Qatar.

On 23 June 2025, US and Qatari Patriot batteries intercepted 13 of 14 ballistic missiles launched by Iran at Qatar's Al-Udeid Air Base.

Qatar has invested heavily in US- and European-made air defences, including the latest Patriot, with batteries normally deployed at five dedicated bases, although these face northeast towards Iran and do not have a 360° engagement capability. The Patriots are protected by shorter-range National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMSs).

The QEADF captain said that on 23 June “falling debris was our biggest concern. With THAAD, if we can hit missiles further away, we won't have the risk of debris”.

He added that Qatar already has Patriot's fire-control system, which he thought could be made compatible with a THAAD battery as well.
