Latvia is procuring Dynamit Nobel Defence Skorpion 2 remote minelaying systems. (Dynamit Nobel Defence)

The Latvian Ministry of Defence (MoD) and National Defence Logistics and Procurement Centre signed a EUR50 million (USD58 million) contract with Dynamit Nobel Defence on 22 October for Skorpion 2 remote minelaying systems, the MoD and German company have announced. The contract includes AT2+ anti-tank mines, other system-related equipment, and training of personnel to operate the systems.

Latvian Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds said, “The acquisition of minelaying systems is a strategic step toward strengthening our country's defence capabilities. It is an essential part of a broader plan to strengthen the security and defence of Latvia's eastern border. These investments ensure that Latvia is ready to defend its territory and population against any type of threat.”

The Latvian MoD said on its website on 22 October that the agreement provides for the involvement of local industry in promoting security of supply and the opportunity to conclude further agreements with Dynamit Nobel Defence, which added on its website on 24 October that it would thereby make an important contribution to strengthening security of supply and promoting regional value creation. The German company also raised the possibility of other countries joining the project and concluding their own supply contracts.

Latvia is also procuring Panzerabwehrrichtmine (PARM) DM22 anti-tank mines.
